In the height of the Covid-19 pandemic in May 2020, President Jameson H. Tan instructed the College of Agriculture (CA) to make a feasibility study for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program. Led by Dr. Julita P. Mendoza, CA successfully crafted a feasibility study which favors the new offering. Other CA faculty members involved in making the feasibility study were Evelyn Alera, Robert Capalad, WIlhelmina Villasper, and Helen Manalastas.
In June 2020, Dr. Honeylet J. Nicolas, the lone DVM faculty in BASC, together with the CA team, defended the proposal to offer DVM as a new undergraduate program to the BASC Board of Trustees in its 2nd regular quarterly meeting. The BOT Resolution No. 20-1295, s.2020 has officially authorized the College of Agriculture to offer the DVM program starting 1st Semester, SY 2020-2021.
Since the approval of the program, new faculty members were employed by BASC to teach major subjects for the growing number of students. The DVM department, with the guidance of President Tan and VP-Academic Affairs Dr. Cecilia S. Santiago, and the full support of the College of Agriculture led by its dean, Dr. Julita Mendoza, worked on obtaining the Certificate of Program Compliance from the Commission on HIgher Education. The COPC No. 005-2023 was released by CHED-RO3 on April 2023, signifying the DVM’s compliance to CHED standards starting SY 2023-2024.
For nine semesters, the DVM program was under the College of Agriculture as a distinct department, with Dr. Nicolas as Chairperson. In December 2024, the BOT approved the creation of a separate institute for DVM program. Thus, on January 2025, for the opening of the 2nd Semester, SY 2024-2025, the Institute of Veterinary Medicine was officially recognized. The IVM was led by Dr. Honeylet J. Nicolas as Dean, Dr. Celso S. Sto. Domingo as Assistant Dean, and Dr. Collin D. Arroyo as Program Chairperson. The faculty members also include Dr. Trisha Mhaye C. Campit (Institute Secretary), Dr. Alyssa Marie G. Garcia (OJT Coordinator), and Dr. Concepcion D. Villacorta (part-time faculty).
